The Egyptian Museum

The Citadel of Saladin (Arabic: Qal'at Salah al-Din) is a historic fortress in Cairo, Egypt that plays a significant role in the country's history and architecture. It was built in the 12th century by Sultan Salah ad-Din (Saladin), the founder of the Ayyubid dynasty, and served as a defensive fortification against the Crusaders. Here is some important information about the citadel:

Construction: The citadel was built between 1176 and 1183 on a hill known as Mokattam Hill. This site was chosen due to its strategic location as it offers a good view of the city of Cairo and the Nile.
Purpose: The main function of the citadel was to protect Cairo from enemy attacks. It also served as the seat of government and military administration.
Later expansions: Under the Mamluks and later Ottoman rulers, the citadel was further expanded and modernized. It remained the political center of Egypt until the 19th century.
